Introduction to Team Cheng
Mission Statement
Team Cheng Goal
Team Cheng was founded by Sensei Paul Cheng in 2003. He envisioned
having a multi-style Martial Arts Team competing in the areas of Forms,
Weapons, and Sparring. The team is comprised of both adults and youth from
diverse backgrounds. By 2004, Paul Cheng was awarded "
Instructor of the
Year"
by the World Karate Union Hall of Fame. In 2005 the team had earned
recognition and was inducted into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame as
"National Karate Team of the Year". Last season, Team Cheng had much
success attending an average of two tournaments a month throughout the
Tri-state area as well as attending The US Open and ISKA World Martial Arts
Championships, held in Orlando, FL and placed 4th in the Elite 8 Award.
National Team Cheng is a non-profit organization exempt from taxation under
Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Tournament Discounts - The team holds fund raisers, selling cookie dough,
pizza kits, candles, and raffle tickets, to raise money to help pay for tournament
costs, uniforms, equipment, snacks and other costs.

Extra Practice - Team members receive extra practice on Friday nights and
some Saturday afternoons. These practices focus on the individual member's
needs and strengths.

Friends - The extra practices and day-long tournament trips enable the
members of Team Cheng and their families to bond, becoming a great group of
friends.

Sportsmanship - Success is a mountain that through practice each member is
climbing. Being The Best means you have reached the top of the mountain and
the only place to go is downhill. No one on the team is the best, and we make
sure the members know this.

Recognition - Recognition within the class is swell, but having the chance to
become a recognized competitor when you step into a tournament is even
better. Team members are given the opportunity to give themselves a name.

Leadership - Many of our team members become Junior Leaders, Assistant
Instructors, and even Instructors.

Exposure to Various Martial Arts - Team members are encouraged to attend
more tournaments than their classmates. Attending large amounts of
tournaments gives members the chance to see other styles of martial arts.

Demonstrations - The school performs demonstrations at community events,
which the Team does the majority of the performance.
